Welcome to the Genesee Valley Chapter! .

 

We welcome Arlene Nanry as our new Membership Chair. Many thanks to Laurie Palmer for her dedication and hard work over the past few years as Membership Chair!

Members have several opportunities to take the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider course locally. Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo is holding the course in June, September and November. The brochure can be accessed HERE. The next opportunity at University of Rochester Medical Center will be in July. The brochure can be accessed HERE.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has a complimentary online continuing education activity for nurses on Adult Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. If you are interested in participating, 1.75 CEU are available through Dec 16, 2010. Go to:

Scholarships/Awards/New Members

 4 $150 educational scholarships (1 each quarter), 2 scholarships for GVONS Teaching Day and 1 scholarship for ONS Congress registration will be awarded in 2010.  CLICK HERE for eligibility criteria and application. GVONS Outstanding Oncology Nurse Award: The Annual Outstanding Oncology Nurse Award recognizes a nurse who has been chosen by fellow GVONS members and colleagues as exemplifying excellence in oncology nursing. Cancer Center - Apheresis Program - Level II - III

PT position available (20 hours), primarily days with on call responsibilities
RN needed for busy procedural area specializing in therapeutic apheresis (plasma exchanges, peripheral blood stem cell collections, photopheresis, erythrocytopheresis and cellular depletions). 5 years acute medical experience, excellent IV skills, strong assessment and communication skills required. Radiation Oncology – Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

 

FT position available, daytime hours (Monday – Friday).Work with a multidisciplinary Radiation Oncology team in patient assessment, diagnosis and intervention. Will work collaboratively with Radiation Oncology faculty to meet needs based on increased volume of patients. Must have good organizational skills with proven ability to work in a team oriented environment. Must have excellent communication skills. Requires NYS certificate as a Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant, 3 years of medical/surgical experience. Preferred 2 years medical oncology or radiation oncology.  Internal applicants submit resume to Associate Director, Box 704.

 

 

 

Registered Nurse-Level II - III - Radiation Oncology (166393)

      

Per Diem position available, primarily days, 8 hour shifts. Recent acute care experience preferred. Responsibilities include: care coordination, patient education and telephone management. Must possess strong communication skills, be autonomous in decision making and have excellent assessment skills. Experience with all age groups preferred. Nurse Practitioner - Thoracic Oncology and GI Oncology - Outpatient Cancer Center - FT position available

The Wilmot Cancer Center has a full time opening for a Nurse Practitioner in its state of the art outpatient Cancer Center. The successful candidate will work with physicians and nursing staff in both the Thoracic Oncology Practice and the GI Oncology practice to provide exceptional patient care and service. Responsibilities will include outpatient management, including history and physical examinations, writing prescriptions and orders, following patients on treatment and in follow-up and providing continuity and support to patients and families. The ideal candidate will have experience in Oncology, either as a Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse. NYS registration as a Nurse Practitioner and ANCC Certification is required. Candidates will be required to complete the ONS chemotherapy/biotherapy course and be credentialed to write chemotherapy orders according to SMH policy. Nurse Practitioner - Blood and Marrow Transplant Program - FT position available, weekend coverage (usually one weekend a month) is required

The Wilmot Cancer Center is seeking qualified candidates for a full time Nurse Practitioner for its Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for overall management of patients receiving blood and marrow transplant and/or treatment for hematologic malignancies in the inpatient setting. Qualified candidates should possess (or be eligible for) Adult and/or Family Nurse Practitioner certification in New York State as well as previous Oncology experience as an RN or NP, preferably in the specialty of Blood/ marrow transplant or Leukemia management. Oncology certification or other relevant ANCC certification preferred.Submit resume to Patti_Murray@urmc.rochester.edu.

Educational Opportunity (7/12/10)
An educational program on Reprogramming Gene Expression and Protein Activity: Insights on Histone Deacetylase in Cancer is being presented by Merck Oncology on July 21st. Please refer to the associated file for full details. This is not a regular GVONS meeting - GVONS meetings will resume in September. Hope you are having a great summer!

GVONS Membership Directory (6/22/10)
The 2010 GVONS Membership Directory is available online for GVONS members to use. It is found in the Membership Directory portion of the Website. A copy can be accessed by opening the "associated file" portion of this e-mail. It is a non-printable password-protected file to protect the privacy of our members. Members may access the file using the password GVONS2010.

Also, just a reminder: The deadline to register for the July 16th and 23rd session of the ONS Chemotherapy-Biotherapy Provider course is Friday, June 25th. The registration form can be accessed from the website or you may contact Michelle Miller, Nurse Leader at the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong, 273-2163.

Community Service Opportunity (6/7/10)
On Sunday June 13th Isaiah House is holding it's Annual Ice Cream Social Fundraiser. It is a great opportunity for GVONS to reach into our community. Teaching Day and other upcoming educational opportunities (5/27/10)
The registration form for the June 9, 2010 GVONS Teachng Day "Across the Spectrum: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Cancer Care can be accessed from the calendar page on the GVONS website, including the option of receiving a reminder e-mail. A printer-friendly copy of the registration form can be accessed from the home page of the website or by opening the "associated file" in this e-mail.

GVONS Teaching Day (4/27/10)
The 2010 GVONS Teaching Day program "Across the Spectrum: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Cancer Care" will be held on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at the Monroe Golf Club. GVONS April Meeting (4/15/10)
The April GVONS meeting will be held on April 21st at Highland Hospital and will provide 1 CEU to attendees. "Radiation Offers New Cures and Ways to do Harm" will be presented by Amy Kates, RN, MS. Please bring laundry detergent to be donated to Isaiah House as our community outreach project for the month. Details about the meeting can be accessed on the Calendar of our GVONS website.

GVONS March Meeting (3/4/10)
The March GVONS meeting will be held on March 17th at the Brio Mediterranean Bistro. The topic will be Molecular Targets (no CEUs). A brochure with full details is attached to this e-mail; information can also be obtained on the GVONS web page on the Calendar. Our Community Outreach collection will be for local food shelves. Please bring peanut butter and jelly (no glass containers) to the meeting if you would like to participate.

GVONS February Meeting (2/4/10)
The GVONS February meeting will be held on February 17, 2010. Details are in the attached flyer, or you can find information on the Calendar page of the GVONS website. You can use the Calendar page to send you an e-mail reminder of upcoming events. I will be updating the calendar with event information as it becomes available.

GVONS January Meeting Update and New Info on the Webpage (1/13/10)
Attached please find the flyer with detailed information regarding the upcoming January meeting and RSVP contact infomration. It does not state so, but dinner will be included. The flyer can also be downloaded from our web page.

GVONS January Meeting (1/8/10)
Happy New Year! Our January meeting will be held on January 20th at the Collins Auditorium at Highland Hospital. The topic will be "Immunomodulatory Antibodies for the Treatment of Advanced Melanoma" and will provide 1 CEU to attendees. More information will be provided on our webpage as it becomes available.

Please bring a nonperishable food item to the meeting for our Community Outreach program.

Don't forget to bring your 2010 membership form and dues to the meeting. Starting with the February meeting you will be charged the non-member fee if you have not renewed your membership.

New ASCO/ONS Chemotherapy Safety Standards Now Available!
ONS and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) have collaborated to develop the first national standards for the safe administration of chemotherapy drugs, focused on the adult population in the ambulatory setting. These standards will be published in both the Oncology Nursing Forum and Journal of Clinical Oncology, and are now available on the ONS web site.

If you’d like to have a supply of 2010 Oncology Nursing Certification Test Bulletins available at your chapter meetings, request a supply from ONCC by emailing oncc@ons.org. The 2010 Test Bulletin contains complete eligibility criteria, test blueprints, and reference lists for OCN®, CBCNTM, AOCNP®, AOCNS®, and CPHONTM Tests.

Go Green with ONCC and Save!
ONCC is working to reduce its environmental footprint by providing certification products and services in a responsible manner. You can help, by applying for certification online. ONCC offers a secure online registration system that is easy to use and available 24/7. The online registration system helps ONCC to reduce costs by reducing the amount of data entry and paper handling needed to complete application processing. ONCC is passing those costs on to candidates. Certification fees for applications submitted online via ONCC’s registration system are $25 lower than fees for paper applications submitted by mail or fax.
